Who we are & information

Headdies

At Headdies we support the American pipe art movement. It is our hope that pipe art will one day be universally viewed and accepted as a legitimate art form.
True art has always been embraced by some and misunderstood by others. Every art movement has started out underground before being accepted by the mainstream.

True art is incendiary, provoking, and controversial.

But whether supporter or detractor, champion or critic, our voices are equal. No single opinion should be taken as fact, and no one group has the power to label art or determine beauty.

Throughout history, art has been censored and banned, but time has proved the close-minded few are not able to suppress the freedoms of the many.

At Headdies we support freedom of speech, ideas and expression.

Are all of your products really made in America?

Headdies’ beautiful and innovative designs are made in the San Fernando valley. They embody the spirit of California, a progressive state that has always been at the forefront of advances in science, technology, and personal freedom.

Why do you use 22 karat gold labeling on your scientific glass?

Our 22 karat gold labeling symbolizes the California gold rush, an immortal symbol of the American dream. Our goal is to provide high quality scientific glass at an affordable price.

What is the proper way to clean and care for my Headdies scientific glass tubes?

Gold is a beautiful and resilient precious metal, but it can also fall victim to harsh pipe cleaners and other abrasives. Wipe down your gold labels with a soft terry cloth or micro fiber cloth.

Some tap waters have a high acidic count; never soak your gold labels in water or put them in the dishwasher. To ensure the durability of your Headdies glass only use pipe cleaner on the inside of the tube and never on the outside.

Do you accept PayPal?

No. We can not accept PayPal payments due to their rules against selling glass pipes.

Can I pay using a money order?

We do not currently accept money orders at this time.

I’m a store owner. How can I become a Headdies authorized reseller?

To open a wholesale account please call 1-855-241-2500 and speak to one of our sales representatives. After you complete your first order we’ll list your store name and address on our locations page.

Ashcatcher or AC

An extra piece you can attach between the slide and down stem of a tube, that has a smaller water chamber used to filter smoke before it goes into the actual waterpipe. It is also used to catch any ash that gets sucked through the dish, keeping the tube clean and free of ash, hence the term.

Basket Weave

A design pattern used in glass blowing.

Bent Neck or BN

Refers to the angling of either a dish, down stem, diffuser or mouthpiece of a tube.

Bore

The diameter of the tube on a waterpipe normally measured in mm. How thick the glass is.

Borosilicate

This is the type of glass used for many pipes – it is a very hard and sturdy glass that has to be heated to a much higher degree than other glasses. The result is tobacco pipes that last longer and are less likely to break. Pyrex is the most commonly borosilicate.

Bubbler

Smaller water pipe more like a regular dry pipe than a waterpipe, although bubblers have a dish, down stem, water chamber and mouth piece all in one piece of glass. Come in several shapes and designs (chubbler, inline, sidecar, sherlock, hammer, stemless, etc.).

Cane

Color rods wrapped around each other creating unique color patterns.

Carb or Choke

In a glass tobacco pipe, this is a hole in the glass that you put a finger on. This helps regulate the air flow through the piece.

Carbon Filter

Small piece of glass placed between the slide and down stem containing a sphere that is filled with carbon rock used to filter the smoke even farther. Carbon filters are supposed to remove carcinogens and make for a smoother smoke.

Chillum

Smoking pipe originating from India that is a straight cylinder tube with no carb or choke.

Collaboration or Colab

When two or more artists get together to work on a single glass piece. Can also mean an artist and a company working together who normally don’t.

Dichro

Glass with a special metallic coating that reflects and refracts light. This is a metal created by NASA – the U.S. space agency. Color is applied to the Dicroic glass. This is applied to a piece in endless ways. This result is a shimmering, glittery metallic color.

Diffuser

Multiple holes in the bottom of the downstem of a bubbler or waterpipe downstem, creating a smoother airflow.  Diffusers separate the smoke out for a smoother, fuller hit. Diffusers are not limited to the downstem and can be located in several places in the waterpipe like the ash catcher and the percolator. D-Cut or Diamond cut- refers to a diffuser with a specific pattern of cuts. Small slits are made at the bottom on the end of the down stem in a waterpipe or bubbler.

Disc Diffuser

A type of diffuser traditionally used in stemless tubes but becoming more popular. A disc covered with water, and as you inhale, the smoke is forced through the holes/slits pierced in the disks, thus diffusing the smoke.

Disco

A silver sparkle color usually mixed with another

Drag

The amount of restriction you get while taking a hit. Better quality perc, diffuser, etc…you should (typically) get less drag.

Dry Piece

Any smoking device that does not use any kind of water filtration. Available in numerous designs, shapes, and sizes (chillum, steamroller, spoon, hammer, sherlock, sidecar, etc.).

Electroforming

In most cases, is metal built-up over a non-metallic surface and it can be quite thick. Some of the common uses for electroforming are jewelry, mold making and reproduction of parts.

Flame Polished

The process of cutting a logo or image onto a glass piece. It gets it’s name because originally when the piece is removed, the area on the glass is rough and is then “polished” with a flame to make it clear.

Frit

Small pieces of color that are used to decorate pipes.

Fuming (Silver)

When pure silver is burned inside a tobacco pipe, it stains the glass. This allows the glass to change color, reacting with the chemicals created from smoking tobacco. With silver fuming, the glass no longer looks clear but instead has a cloudy bluish white tint.

Fuming (Gold)

Pure gold is burned to create chemical changes that add a magnificent effect on the piece. When clean, the gold fuming produces an array of vibrant purples, reds, pinks, or even burnt orange. This fuming changes the color of the piece after smoking.

Glass on glass or GonG

Referring to the style of joining various pieces of a waterpipe or bubbler (down stem or slide) involving the use of a ground glass joint. Typically measured in 14mm or 18mm, which refers to the joint diameter (alternatively, 14.4 or 18.8) Glass on glass joints provide a superior seal to rubber grommets, and are commonly used in laboratory glassware.

Glass Screen

These small pieces of glass act as a stopper for slides with large punches, while still providing flow. Screens can also be made of metal although they’re not the same quality as glass ones (not as reusable).

Honeycomb

A glass blowing design pattern.

Horns

A glass blowing design shape.

Ice Pinches

Three or four pinches made in the straight part of the tube used to trap ice.  Ice Pinches allow the ice to fill the tube without it falling into the water creating a colder, smoother hit.

Inline

Refers to a “sideways stem” in the piece found in ashcatchers and waterpipes, the stem normally has d-cuts or piercings throughout.

Inside Out

This style of glass has the color applied to the inside of the pipe creating two layers of glass. The layer of color on the inside shines vibrantly through the clear outside.  Pipes blown inside out are stronger as they have two applications of glass.

Implosion

A glass blowing design pattern created by pushing the color inside the clear glass.

Joint

Area where the tube jets out with an opening for a down stem to fit into.

Keck Clip

Small plastic clip used to secure a glass on glass down stem to the tube so it doesn’t accidentally get pulled out when removing the slide.

Kiln

Device used to anneal and cool glass slowly

Magnifier

Clear glass added to the outside which enlarges the detailed colors inside.

Marble

Glass balled together with an endless array of patterns found inside.  Many marbles have an artist signature.

Maria

When a glass tube or rod is heated and then both ends pushed together. This makes the hot area bulge out.

Milli

A small design on a pipe with a magnifier over it.

Mouthpiece

In a glass tobacco pipe, this is the point where your mouth touches the pipe.

Oil Rig

A waterpipe specifically designed to smoke concentrates by replacing the slide with a dome and nail.

Percolator

Made in tubes and ashcatchers. An Extra camber usually made up of 4-8 tree arms (can be less or more) and it allows smoke to be further filtered by water, creating a smoother hit. Dome percolators are an older design and not used as much anymore (PURE uses a lot of dome percs). Tree arms and discs are used more now.  Types or percs include (but are not limited to) Inline, Tree, Showerhead, Disc, Brilliance, and Perc Downstem.

Pierced

Referring to a diffuser with small holes or circles are made at the bottom on the end of the down stem, instead of small slits (D-Cut).

Production or Prodo

This refers to production style pipes that glass artist make many of as opposed to one-of-a-kind pieces (Headdie), usually following a close formula.

Raking

This style is where color is applied to the outside of the glass. The colors are then “raked” back and forth.

Rettichello

A design of two opposing spirals layered on one another. In other words, cane organized in a crisscross pattern to form a fine net, which may contain tiny air traps.

Sandblasting

High-pressure air mixed with sand applied to the surface of glass to carve texture.

Slide

The small piece with a glass on glass joint where you put your product. It is removed from the tube when clearing a hit to increase airflow.

Shower Head

A diffuser with a rounded ball or cylinder with cuts or holes all the way around its edge to diffuse the smoke. Basically it looks like a completely virtual shower head.

Snorkel Carb

A carb that usually rises from the bottom of a can of a bubbler just above the intended water level and looks similar to a snorkel. When the carb is released air clears from just above the water level so all smoke is cleared with ease, whereas a normal carb that sits higher up tends to leave stale smoke bellow, or is harder to completely clear. In some instances the snorkel carb allows the bubbler to be turned upside down while filled, for easy ashing.

Splash Guard

Referring to a tubes extra chamber usually on top of a percolator, created so the water does NOT go up the tube and get on your lips when you’re taking a hit.

Steamroller

Usually a larger dry piece in the shape of a long cylinder with a bowl in the middle and also openings at each end to clear the smoke(mouth/finger holes).

Spoon

A dry pipe used to smoke that is shaped similarly to a spoon.

Stemless

Refers to a tube that has no removable down stem, instead it has an attached glass stem that goes down into the water chamber, usually making an “L” shape outside of the tube.

Ti

Slang term for a titanium pad, usually on a metal swivel attached to a glass on glass bell curve that is heated up until red hot then used to vaporize oil extract.

Tube

Slang term for a water pipe.

Vaporizer

An alternative to smoking.  These devices avoid the burning process and, consequently, eliminates the health problems associated with smoking.

Whip

Clear thin plastic tube with a glass mouthpiece that is used with most vaporizers. Comes in Hands-free and Hands-on depending on what kind of vaporizer it came with.

Wig Wag

A line pattern consisting of spirals – This is when one takes rods of color and hand-makes solid color tubing. It is made with an endless variety of color patterns and twisted back and forth, creating a distinctive look. A higher level of skill is required to use this method. A specific type of wig-wag is called a reversal where the solid color tube is made and the axis is switched during the blowing process. The result is a stunning visual treat.

Window

A glass blowing technique.  Outside work is blown over inside work.  A space of clear glass is applied over the inside work creating a glimpse at the inside work.

Worked

An area of glass that is filled in with color beyond the normal “clear” glass.
